Sound broken in 2.8.1 on Windows

Flood of complaints coming in when I accidentally included the OpenALSoft dll from 2.8.1 with the latest release of Titan Attacks. Sound garbled or scratchy or only coming through headphones and other crazy shit. I don't really know why or how. I simply switched back to the dll used in 2.7.1 and all is well once more.

Did anything significant change in OpenALSoft between 2.7.1 and 2.8.1?

Not much, only more than 600 changes since the 2.7.1 release(10th Feb 2011)! source.

You could try the latest nightly build of OpenALSoft, maybe some of the changes since the 2.8.1 release have already fixed the issues.

I haven't heard any issues.
Do you know anything about the users? - OS, sound card etc etc.

One of the major changes was a backend specifically for vista/windows 7 - could be buggy.

But need more information.
