It's down to the driver what it defines, assumptions could be made, but thats a baaaaaad thing to do.

The webstart demo is about 12 months old or something silly, ignore it, it's not up to date

The way I'd seen them being used is like you say, just defaults, then once the config screen is run, you get the id's from the component selected, and store that, then next startup, you can just try and get that component from the id.
