Do the OpenAL demos use the software version of OpenAL?

I am asking this because the position test demo does not work very well on my machine with Vista. Left, center and right all sound as if the come from the center, which I guess is wrong?

I have tried the hardware version before on Vista with the same results and that's the reason for my question.

The MovingSoundTest seems to work though so there is probably a problem with the PositionTest source code or the wav files.
