gnome 2.8 + lockawt problem!? (kde, icewm are working)

I''am using the JME engine with lwjgl and here is my problem:
if I use gnome 2.8 and press the "close" button on the properties dialog of an jme sample app, the app hangs on the lwjgl->linuxdisplay->lockawt() from getavailabedisplaymodes().
When I use the exact same configuration, except switching to kde 3.3 or icewm everything works. Seems like a awt / gnome issue. Has someone a solution or can tell me more about this issue, why it happens? Am I the only one with this problem?
(java 1.5.0_02 or Java 1.6.0_b39 - makes no difference)
