Title: $45,000 grand prize value for your Java Game
Post by: CaptainJester on March 23, 2004, 13:27:53
Over at https://games-contest.dev.java.net/ a new Java Game contest has just started.  The grand prizes is quite impressive.  Here is a little blurb:

QuoteCalling all independent video game developers! Have you developed a cool video game using Java technology? If so, enter it in the 2004 Java Technology Game Development Contest and compete for $50,000 in prizes! The entry period begins March 23, 2004 and runs through June 7, 2004 at 9:00am Pacific Time.

The Grand prizes includes a license for the GameSpy Toolkit, which has APIs for network games.  Can you say multi-player AlienFlux?(cas)

ps.  Forum mods might want to make this a sticky.

[edit]  Damn, just read it must be 100% pure Java.

is JOGL a full java implementation? or am I completely naive.

If it is, the jME fans rejoice. JOGL will be implemented!  :)

I think it is, because the "pure java" APIs include those on java.net, where jogl is.

Hmm, "100% java as avalible from java.com java.sun.com and java.net" so that would include Jogl, Xith, etc. but not LWJGL.

"may include any additional java APIs found on the web properties" doesn't make sense to me, but I assume that means they can choose to approve useage of non-official APIs if they want. Will have to see what comes of this...

Isn't that Gamespy API ANSI-C, as described on their developer pages?

if JOGL is allowed and LWJGL is not - or even JOGL having a more pure status than LWJGL I am going to explode! That would just be sooooo f*cking lame of sun!

:D

Great news.  The contest board has answered:

QuoteChrisM wrote:
Now, on to the business of what is allowed.  This contest is about this community and game developers finging their way to Java technologies.  Of course we are going to allow LWJGL and GAGE to be used.  These are popular technologies in this community and well represented here.  however, we reserve the right to exclude any APIs not hosted on one of our properties.

It's good to see that they are staying within the spirit of the competition.

Now this post should be a sticky, since LWJGL is allowed.

What the hell is Super Elvis?  It seems to have won the competition and it's coming out on PuppyGames... Why no announcement?  Who wrote it?  Does it use LWJGL?  Come on, we want details!

There's a thread at the javagaming site with a link to the webstart for Super Elvis.  It's alot of fun, some levels are really hard.  Or, I just haven't figured out the trick yet.

Nifty.  Nifty nifty nifty.  Now, if only you had a little elvis sample that would say "thank ya.. thank ya veruh much" after each level completion... ;)

Also posted on javagaming.org (i'd forgotten about that site until today, btw):  Exit button doesn't seem to do anything on my machine.  Alt-F4 will kill the game, but I get some funky mouse-focus issues for a few minutes after that.

Hold ESC down to quit :)

We aren't going to use any Elvis samples because some f*cktard American Elvis company will come and hassle us. As the game is, it's just a bloke called Elvis with a dodgy haircut, and he can be anybody.

Thanks, I'll try it. :)  And true that on the samples.. But there's nothing stopping you from making your own samples.  Get an Asian guy with a heavy accent.  It'd be hilarious.   :D
