Title: Thawte shutting down free certificates
Post by: Ciardhubh on October 06, 2009, 15:41:23
November 16th Thawte will shut down their free mail certificate program. These certificates were recognised by Java as trustworthy and many small/hobby Java game developers were using them (afaik Slick's web start apps are signed with one of these). This is quite sad because they were the only trusted certificates you could get for free as far as I know. The whole Web of Trust thing will shut down, too.

You can get a free one year Verisign cert but you have to pay to renew it, so it's not really an option.

Thawte's FAQ here:
https://search.thawte.com/support/ssl-digital-certificates/index?page=content&id=SO12658

Thought I'd mention this here because they were quite popular with Java developers.

Bleh. You don't really need certs, nobody really gives a f*ck any more.
