I've been working with LWJGL for about two years and have enjoyed the process enormously. It's a great tool and a very supportive community. I just reached a milestone in a long project that I've been working on and wanted to let you all know, partly out of excitement, partly as a thank you, and also to let you know what I'm doing with LWJGL.
I don't make games, I'm a digital artist and make interactive artwork using java/opengl. I often treat openGL like a drawing or painting tool, using textures and pbuffers to build up images in many translucent layers.

I'm in a show in New York city till December 3rd, where I have three computers running interactive pieces in a gallery. Images and info are online at http://potatoland.org/empire
If anyone's in the NYC area let me know. I'd love to hook up and talk shop sometime.

Heh if napier allows it Mazon should post it as use-case
I would love to see your show! I'm driving into the city on the 2nd I won't be getting in until pretty late, but I see that the gallery is open from 11-6 on saturdays. If your not busy I'd love to see your work and get a chance to talk a bit!
excellent stuff! - I always love when people deploy lwjgl in a finished product, and strangely enough even more so when it's deployed in ways I wouldn't have imagined.
As for a use case, I wouldn't know what to write :D
Do write a follow-up after the 3rd on how it went.
Oh! Now they are excellent pieces. A fantastic showcase of fine art, if I may say so.
Cas :)
Thanks for the feedback. It's been a challenge learning openGL, trying out java bindings, etc. but the results are very solid. I run these pieces on laptops with ATI 9700 cards. The LCD panels are 1920x1200 and I'm doing full framebuffer copies to texture each frame. Still getting about 60 fps, which is plenty for the kind of animation I'm doing.
I'll let you know how it goes.
That looks rather nice, is there any way to see it moving (other than going to see it :P ).
Those are wicked! Awesome job!
JGLMark could use a good artist such as yourself, if you are interested shoot me a mail.
Quoteis there any way to see it moving (other than going to see it ).
I plan to put some of these online with webstart. Just haven't gotten there yet.
There's a short video online: http://bitforms.com/exhibition_pop_napier5_vid.html
(doesn't work on my PC, but is fine on Mac)
simply amazing :)
Really impressive, napier.
Hopefully one day we'll see your stuff on scene.org
Keep an eye on JGLMark, for more of Napier's incredible visuals....
I got to see his show this weekend and it was amazing! The still shots really don't do justice to the actual works! I could have stood there for hours playing with them!
you did record it on video camera....didn't you?
 I didn't have a video camera with me! I took a still camera, but decided that wouldn't do it justice! Maybe after the show we can get him to put it up via websart or a video of it or something like that.
Hey CaseyB,
Glad you got to see the show. Yeah, it's a different experience to interact with the piece. It's very tactile.
I've been planning to put up a piece via webstart. Just in a crunch for the past few weeks, have to deal with money-work. I'll let you know when I get something together.
That could be dangerous! I'd have to balance playing with you art and actually doing work!!!
*bump*
I'd really really like to see this in action. Pweese ?
Heh. Thanks for the reminder.
ok let's give this a shot. I made a web start app of one of the pieces from this series:
http://potatoland.com/run/lwapps/kk3_skywhite.jnlp
For those not familiar with Web Start, the link above will tell you that the application certificate is invalid and will recommend that you don't trust me. If you're in a trusting mood, go ahead and load the app.
It will open fullscreen, 1024x768. I tested on winXP and Mac OSX. It's configured for linux too but I haven't tested.
You should see a model of a building in the middle of the screen. You can drag that around. Think of it as a brush, it will leave trails behind.
In the lower left you can click three buttons: reset, zoom in, zoom out.
Let me know if it gives you problems.
Works fine for me.
Must say its pretty cool. 8)
Its alot better than just looking at the screenshots :D
